Visio shares many of the same security features as Microsoft Office apps. These include Information Rights Management (IRM) to set file access permissions and built-in data loss prevention (DLP) and multi-factor authentication (MFA) to help prevent data leaks.

Symptoms or Error

Visio or Project license issue when deploying in layers separate from Office 2010

Solution

Overview

If Microsoft Office 2010 and its separately licensed applications are incorrectly layered, the first time you use Office 2010 the setup program reconfigures the software and changes the license. For example: Visio Standard 2010 incorrectly deployed becomes Visio Premium 2010.

With the setup described in this article, you can deploy any combination of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Visio, and Microsoft Project without encountering licensing issues. This article explains how to:

  • Ensure you have the correct media.
  • Edit license keys as needed so the correct edition is installed.
  • Deploy Office and any separately licensed Office applications in layers with the required prerequisites.

Before you start

Before diving into Office application layering, please be prepared with the following:

  1. Identify which combinations of Microsoft Office 2010 applications you will deploy to desktops. For example: Office 2010 ProPlus + Visio, Office 2010 ProPlus + Project, and/or Office 2010 ProPlus + Visio + Project.
  2. Obtain KMS Volume Licenses for Microsoft Office and each of the separately licensed applications (Visio, Project) you're deploying.
  3. Find the Microsoft Office Volume License media.
2010

If you would would like to become more familar with Microsoft Office 2010 volume licensing, review the Microsoft article about how to Configure and deploy volume activation of Office 2010.

Step 1: Verify that you have the Microsoft Office 2010 volume license media

The volume license media is different than retail media, so it's important to verify that you have the volume licensing media. Here's how:

Visio 2010 Standard Download

  1. Run the setup.exe program from the installation media.
  2. At the bottom of the window that asks you to 'Read the Microsoft Software License Terms,' inside the center box the last line looks something like the following, where the VL indicates volume licensing:
    EULAID:O14_RTM_VL.1_RTM_EN
  3. If VL does not appear in the last line, try again to find and veify the volume license media.
  4. If VLdoes appear in the last line, go to the next step.

Step 2: Install Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010

Install Microsoft Office Professional Plus in a layer.

  1. Turn off Office updates. You can do this by running Word and deselecting the Office updates.
  2. Rearm the Office activation using the installation guide from Microsoft. For example:
    cd Program filesCommon filesMicrosoft sharedOfficeSoftwareProtectionPlatform; ospprearm.exe
  3. Finalize the layer.

Step 3: Install any separately licensed Microsoft Office applications

Next, you'll create a layer for each of the application combinations that you'll be deploying to desktops. The following table shows the layers to create and prerequisites to include for each possible combination of applications you're deploying.

For desktops that require this combination of applications..Create a layer containing..And these prerequisites..

Use these steps to create the layers for the separately licensed applications:

  1. Copy the installation media to a drive from which you can install the application. A fileserver directory works well.
    Note: Copying to the C: drive is not recommended, as it takes up space on the disk for the layer. Even though you can delete the copy at the end of installation, this causes blocks to be allocated for the thin provisioned disk for the layer.
  2. Find out whether the Microsoft Office KMS client key, called the PIDKEY Value, is set to the correct edition of the product. For example, there are three editions of Visio, and a generic PIDKEY for each edition:

    Visio Standard 2010

    767HD-QGMWX-8QTDB-9G3R2-KHFGJ

    Visio Professional 2010

    7MCW8-VRQVK-G677T-PDJCM-Q8TCP

    Visio Premium 2010

  3. The default edition installed is Visio Premium. If you are installing Visio Standard or Visio Professional, change the PIDKEY to the value for the correct edition.
    1. Find the KMS key for the product and edition you're installing (see the list of KMS keys from the Microsoft article, Troubleshoot volume activation for Office 2010).
    2. In media*.ww, open config.xml for editing.
    3. Look for the line <Configuration Product='productname'>.
    4. Edit the next line of XML, which includes the product KMS key, called the 'PIDKEY Value.' Here's an example of a Visio Premium edition PIDKEY:
      <PIDKEY Value='D9DWC-HPYVV-JGF4P-BTWQB-WX8BJ' />
    5. The edited lines of code should look like this:
      <Configuration Product='VisioStandard'>
      <PIDKEY Value='D9DWC-HPYVV-JGF4P-BTWQB-WX8BJ' />

Step 4: Publish the image

  1. Login to the ELM console
  2. Select Edit Image
  3. Update the layer assignments to include the new Office layer
  4. Publish the new Image Template
